Iowa Statewide
Perinatal Care Program
The Iowa Statewide Perinatal Care Program was developed in 1973 and provides education, development of standards/guidelines of care, consultation to regional and primary providers, and evaluation of the quality of perinatal care delivered in the State of Iowa. Through a contract between the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (Iowa HHS), and the University of Iowa’s College of Medicine (CCOM), these services are offered to all Iowa hospitals providing delivery services.
When the program began in 1973 there were 141 hospitals providing maternity services, though with the mass number of hospital closures over the past 50 years, that number now sits at just 54. According to the most recent data from the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG), Iowa has the fewest number of Obstetrician/Gynecologists per capita of any state in the US.
