Obstetrics Emergency Department Simulation Training Program
OB ED Simulation Training Program
Rural ERs are becoming more and more important in the fight to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality and improve infant outcomes in the state of Iowa, and they are not always prepared for women seeking maternity services to walk into their facility. As part of the Iowa Perinatal Quality Care Program, our statewide obstetric mobile simulation team helps us with our goal of educating ER and EMS providers on how to handle situations that may arise. Our program is designed to bring hands-on training to your facility at no cost to your organization.
What we offer:
- Didactic presentations
- Skills stations
- In-situ simulations
- Debriefing after simulations
- ED OB Resource Guide

GOAL
Improve counseling and use of patient education materials on warning signs and when to seek care. Increase patient awareness of signs and symptoms of common complications.
METHODS
Standardize patient education to ensure healthcare providers relay consistent messages. Nurses at all of Iowa’s 56 birthing hospitals and 23 Title V MCH agencies will be trained by AWHONN.
INTENDED RESULTS
Patients, families, and communities will have increased knowledge of warning signs or the need to seek care and be empowered to call for help. Patients will access care without delay when postpartum complications occur.
